Breast reduction surgery aims to remove excess breast tissue, fat and skin to reduce the size can change the shape of the breasts. Traditionally, it was undertaken to help with symptoms associated with large breasts (macromastia) including:
- Back, neck and shoulder pain
- Breasts that may feel too heavy
- Impact on the ability to be as active as one might like
- Chronic irritation or infections in the skin folds under the breasts
- A change in the shape of the breasts after pregnancy or dramatic weight loss
Dr Lancashire can perform breast reductions as part of a breast cancer operation. This allows a larger volume of breast tissue to be removed including the breast cancer. Both breasts are usually operated on to ensure that symmetry (similar look on both sides) is maintained.
There are number of different ways to perform this type of surgery and the diagrams below outline this.
Not all patients are suitable for breast reduction as part of breast cancer surgery. This type of surgery can add a layer of complexity to breast cancer management. Dr Lancashire will discuss this with you if he believes this is appropriate for your treatment.
