Breast cancer is a condition in which breast tissue cells become abnormal and multiply in an uncontrolled manner. These abnormal cells can invade into the surrounding normal tissues and may spread to other parts of the body.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. The risk of developing breast cancer by age 85 is 1 in 7 for women (14.2%), and 1 in 670 for men (0.1%). Nearly 79% of breast cancers are diagnosed in women over age 50. Just under 5% of breast cancers will be found in women under 40. The average age at diagnosis of breast cancer is 62.
In 2022, it is estimated that 20,568 women will be newly diagnosed with breast cancer, along with around 173 men. That is an average of around 57 people every day.
Although breast cancer is very common, the survival rates are very good. Overall, over 91% of women will survive at least 5 years after their diagnosis, and 83% at 10 years.
